She was married to George S. Arundale, was exponent of Bharatnatyam, an Indian classic dance form, and also worked for the promotion of traditional Indian arts and crafts. A member of the Indian parliament, she had an important role in the introduction of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (1960) and later headed the Animal Welfare Board of India.
